Macetown is a historic gold rush location near Arrowtown and worth the journey for its incredible high country views. Arrowtown is located 20km from Queenstown. Gold was discovered in the Arrow River in 1862 and most of the alluvial gold was mined over the next 3-4 years before the miners left for the west coast goldfields. Access to Macetown is via an unsealed road, suitable for 4WD vehicles only. With 25 river crossings and tracks high up in the valley this road can make your heart skip a beat! You’ll be amazed by spectacular scenery, including the man-made structures dating back to the late 1800s throughout this rugged area. The road to Macetown is popular with trampers, mountain bikers and trail bikers, not to mention the many people trying their hand at panning for gold hoping to strike it rich along the banks of the Arrow River. For a true off road photography experience, Macetown will have you amazed at every corner!
